Cosmic Rays above the Knee
نویسنده
چکیده
An overview on the present observational status and phenomenological understanding of cosmic rays above 10 eV is given. Above these energies the cosmic ray flux is expected to be gradually dominated by an extra-galactic component. In order to investigate the nature of this transition, current experimental activities focus on the measurement of the cosmic ray flux and composition at the ’ankle’ or ’dip’ feature at several EeV. At the ultra high energy end of the spectrum, the flux suppression above 50 EeV is now well established by the measurements of HiRes and the Pierre Auger Observatory and we may enter the era of charged particle astronomy.

Galactic modulation of extragalactic cosmic rays − Alternative scenario of the origin of the knee −
Recently we have shown that the observed knee structure is reproduced well by a superposition of the hypothetical extragalactic cosmic rays modulated by the galactic wind and the galactic cosmic rays originating in supernova remnants. We reexamine this model assuming the chemical composition of the hypothetical extragalactic cosmic rays is the same as that of the galactic cosmic rays of superno...
متن کاملAstroparticle Theory: Some New Insights into High Energy Cosmic Rays
Some new developments obtained in the last few years concerning the propagation of high energy cosmic rays are discussed. In particular, it is shown how the inclusion of drift effects in the transport diffusion equations leads naturally to an explanation for the knee, for the second knee and for the observed behavior of the composition and anisotropies between the knee and the ankle. It is show...
متن کاملA New Measurement of Cosmic Ray Composition at the Knee
The Dual Imaging Cerenkov Experiment (DICE) was designed and operated for making elemental composition measurements of cosmic rays near the knee of the spectrum at several PeV. Here we present the first results using this experiment from the measurement of the average location of the depth of shower maximum, < X max >, in the atmosphere as a function of particle energy. The value of < X max > n...
متن کاملDetailed analysis of observed antiprotons in cosmic rays
In the present work, the origin of antiprotons observed in cosmic rays (above the atmosphere) is analyzed in details. We have considered the origin of the primaries, (which their interactions with the interstellar medium is one of the most important sources of antiprotons) is a supernova type II then used a diffusion model for their propagation. We have used the latest parameterization for anti...
متن کاملThe composition of cosmic rays at the knee ( ∗ )
The solar system is permanently exposed to a vast flux of highly energetic and fully ionized atomic nuclei, the cosmic rays. Their energies extend from the GeV range to at least 10 eV. Over a wide range the energy spectrum follows a power law dN/dE ∝ E . The spectral index changes around 4 PeV from γ ≈ −2.7 to γ ≈ −3.1. This transition phenomenon has been reported for the first time in 1958 [1]...
متن کاملMaximum Particle Energies by Fermi Acceleration and the Origin of Cosmic Rays above the Knee
We derive the maximum accelerated particle energy from first-order and second-order Fermi acceleration at nonrelativistic and relativistic shocks for explosions taking place in a uniform surrounding medium. Second-order stochastic processes in relativistic flows are shown to be capable of accelerating cosmic rays to ultra-high energies. Cosmic rays above the knee of the cosmic ray spectrum can ...
